Study Guide

There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the Support behaviour of children & young people unit. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.

Session 1.  Contribute to a safe and supportive environment
This includes
·         Use safe, supportive and equitable practices appropriate to the development  stage and needs of the child  and/or young person.
·         Recognise  any developmental challenges  or mental health issues of child  or young  person that may have potential impacts on behaviour
·         Identify  contributing  environmental factors
·         Knowledge of definitions  of and differences  between disruptive  behaviour  and behaviours  of concern
·          Knowledge of how learning  difficulties  or mental health issues may affect behaviour
Knowledge of impacts of environment and culture  on behaviour  of   children  and/or young people

A few points to think about for your blog:
·         Why do you think it is important to have an understanding of how mental health issues may impact on children’s behaviour?
·         Give us an example of a child’s behaviour which would be of concern. Why would you consider this behaviour needed to be followed up?
·         How would an effective educator ensure that the environment is supportive & responsive to each child?
Session  2. Use positive support techniques
This includes
·         Establish  expectations  for behaviour  in consultation with supervisor  and in line with work role
·         Provide instructions in a manner appropriate to the child or young person’s needs and context of the work environment and activity
·         Use positive reinforcement  and clear verbal and non-verbal communication  strategies to acknowledge responsible  behaviour
·         Employ appropriate strategies to redirect behaviour  and defuse situations
·         Knowledge of communicative  function  of behaviour  and positive  support strategies  to redirect  behaviour and defuse situations
A few points to think about for your blog
·         What are specific strategies an educator may use to redirect behaviour  and defuse situations. What may be the consequence on behaviour if these strategies are not consistently used?
·         What effect would will learning how to make good decisions & problem solve have on children’s behaviour? Why do think these are good skills to develop?
Session 3 Observe and collect data to assist with development of appropriate strategies for support
This includes
·         Collect data and record observations  as a basis for gaining  understanding  of the child/young  person’s behaviour
·         Use data to demonstrate the frequency,  intensity  and duration of behaviours  requiring  support
A few points to think about for your blog
·         What are the preferred methods for recording observations of children to gain a better understanding of a child’s behaviour?
·         How can these observations assist with the development of appropriate strategies to support the child?
Session 4. Implement strategies to support children  or young people who require additional support
This includes
·         Implement strategies  to support child  or young person with guidance  from supervisor  or as designed  by a specialist
·         Identify areas of concern for discussion  with supervisor
·         Contribute effectively to implementation  of personalised  support plans
A few points to think about for your blog:
·                  Explain why it is necessary or beneficial to seek guidance from the room leader or     specialist when implementing strategies to guide a child’s behaviour?
·         Can you give an example of how you could contribute effectively to the implementation of guidance strategies in consultation with your supervisor?
